Artist Statement
I have always been a person who listens to many perspectives before creating my own. I constantly weigh both sides and mediate the infinite struggle, always trying to find balance, the focal point. This complex inner dialogue consumes me and holds me captive in my head. Glass is my looking glass. From the moment I conceive an idea, my scattered inner-dialogue dissipates into clarity. The process of making the work is as important to me as the final result. The vision of the piece transforms a whirlwind of thoughts in my head into a solitary idea, fueling the fire that feeds my desires.
My fascination with the spiritual realm has been a powerful presence in my life and my work. Throughout history it has proved to have the capacity to bring incomparable happiness, furious destruction, and undeniable loneliness. My work emphasizes the teachings from all religions, with a focus on the beautiful balance between humans, nature, and the spiritual. Amidst the chaos churning in my head, a moment of clarity, a moment in time, and a moment in a story. I focus on creating a powerful scene, one that invokes deep emotions and captures a sacred connection.
My newest work is a continuation of the artistic journey. They are my most important pieces because they teach me so much about myself by challenging me mentally, physically, and spiritually. The work has challenged me to incorporate different materials such as stone and metal to accentuate the figurative and complete the designs. I have begun to embrace contrast of surface texture, color, and processes. While working in a hot shop I am enthralled by the fluidity and the softness of the glass; juxtaposed, my experience working in scientific glass laboratories has taught me about calculated precision, with little room for error. The ability to express emotion through this fragile balance and tell a story is my ultimate goal with this work and my life.
